New Bird Bath
May 11th, 2005Summer and I went out last week and looked at bird baths, knowing that’s what we all wanted to get Wendy for Mother’s Day this year. We looked around and saw a nice big one that would look great in the back yard, but held off on buying it. We were afraid we’d pick something that Wendy just wouldn’t like.
Instead we gave Wendy a placeholder gift – a “certificate”, redeemable for one bird bath – and I prepared the spot in the lawn where the bird bath would go. I prepared the spot in the afternoon while Wendy was in Richmond getting Margo adopted, and then hid it beneath a big piece of cardboard that happened to be in the back yard already. We unveiled it Mother’s Day morning. With this approach, we still show considerable thought and effort, without the risk of picking the wrong bird bath.
Yesterday I took Wendy to the place where Summer and I had shopped. It’s one of those roadside lots with lots of stone sculpture, tables, lawn ornaments, and bird baths just sitting outside. I was willing to take Wendy anywhere she wanted to shop, but this place is close, so we stopped there first. There she found one she liked, and we bought it. Which one? The very same bird bath that Summer and I liked! We now have a nice little “bird spot” in the yard with flowers, birdseed, nesting material, and the new bird bath.
I wanted to buy the large stone monkey too, but Wendy wouldn’t let me.
