Carvel and Krispy Kreme
August 12th, 2005Kuff quotes a report of people getting excited over Carvel Ice Cream coming to Houston. (In April, MeMo put her Carvel recommendation in writing.)
Wendy and I got excited like this when Krispy Kreme finally arrived in these parts a few years back. The KK shops here are upscale and “Californy” in their decorating, but back home the KK was just your traditional coffee shop - complete with chrome-trimmed counters, vinyl-covered post-mounted swivel seats and a gum-smacking matronly waitress who made the rounds with a coffee pot and called everybody “Hon”. Dad used to take us to the KK in Huntsville on the Parkway near Airport Road. We’d eat those chocolate-iced bits of heaven and gaze out the window at the neon Upside Down Sam sign next door. That was thirty years ago, give or take.
After we moved to Texas, our trips back to Alabama included - as a design requirement - a side trip to a KK in Huntsville or Florence. Wendy insisted on it because it was the only way we could get some of that glazed goodness. Now that we have KK in Houston, the KK side trip is optional, although the visit to Terry’s Pizza is still a near-must. As we drove out of Florence last Saturday morning, Wendy spotted a KK and in reflex muttered the words “Mmmm, Krispy Kreme”. We just kept driving. No need to stop there when a sugar-and-fried-dough fix is as close to home as Clear Lake.
