The rumor mill was running extra hard yesterday with news that Google would be launching a new instant messaging site. I went over to Google this morning to see if there had been an announcement. No announcement, but the site is now up at http://talk.google.com with software for download.

I don’t know if I’ll be using Google’s IM myself. IM is of questionable value to me and it’s a known vector for viruses, spyware and other crud that accumulates in the oil pan and makes the engine misfire. Oh yeah and because “Google Talk is not a telephony service and cannot be used for emergency dialing.”

Update: Some has already discovered an Easter Egg in Google Talk.
