New Foster
September 2nd, 2005Yesterday afternoon Jean Samuelson of the Houston Sheltie Sanctuary put out a call for help:
I’ll be sending this plea to all the adoptive homes as well. If you have ever thought of fostering but have not done so, now is the time to step forward. First, we have over 45 dogs in the combined Austin-Houston programs, and these babies need loving foster homes. We think a lot of the influx is due to the energy crisis, because so many of these are owner relinquishments. But, of course – second – we want to help the Shelties in Louisiana. Mary Jo, Sheltie Rescue there and a good friend to HSS, must evacuate. She has 11 Shelties. She thinks half of those can go with her to Baton Rouge where she has some possible homes to assist her. We have promised her the rest can come here and will be transporting them tomorrow. We have also taken in a Sheltie that a Good Samaritan evacuee found and brought to us. We also have at least one Sheltie coming in from one of the hotels because the La. family is being told the dog has to leave because he sheds. We may get more stories like that as hotels perhaps start to get tired of the dogs-hope not. If we hear of more needs in Mississippi and beyond, we will be ready to assist if those folks need us as well. But we need your help to save these dogs.
Wendy and I had discussed the probability that this might happen and had already decided that we would take in an additional dog. I sent an email back saying that we would do what was needed of us. Wendy got a call back this afternoon saying that we would be getting our second dog, a puppy named Kaci (pronounced like Casey). She’s not a refugee from Louisiana, but by taking her in, we’ll make room in the system for the refugee dogs. It doesn’t much matter to us one way or the other. Wendy just picked up Kaci and she’s beautiful. I’ll post pictures soon.
