Movable Type Plugins and SELinux

Friday, March 17th, 2006

At work yesterday, I was setting up Movable Type 3.2 on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 OS with SELinux enabled in Targeting mode. Movable Type worked just fine, except that it refused to discover its plugins. All were installed properly in the right directory, but MT just refused to recognize them. I eventually figured, [...]

“Horse” is Latin for “Pig”

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Fred and Jackie bought a nice big 4-horse trailer a couple of weeks back. I rode with Fred to a farm up north of Nacogdoches to pick up the trailer two weekends ago; it’s about a three hour trip up there from here. It was weird riding through Nacogdoches. I had never been through that [...]

Today’s Listening

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Today I’ll be listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Miles Davis, Blondie, and that band with Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten. I don’t have any Black Sabbath, but I think I have one Ozzy Osbourne song, which I will listen to. Ten points to the first commenter to name what all these acts have in common.

It’s March 10th, the 43rd (or is it the 42nd?) occurrence of that day I have seen. People all over the Internet are celebrating my birthday!

The second heat sink + fan that I ordered is now on its way to the house. This is a result of Episode 182, a tragic accident involving a spinning fan and an errant thumb. I had quite a time finding the first heat sink + fan, as I wrote in Open Comments Friday at [...]

Give Your Snowflake the Han Solo Treatment

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

Popular Science is running a very cool story about preserving snowflakes. Forever. In superglue. The guy who invented this technique also has a web site featuring a periodic table of the elements that he built out of wood (yes, that’s right, a table table). And don’t miss his story of receiving the 2002 Ig Nobel [...]

Laredo in One Minute

Monday, March 6th, 2006

I’ve been experimenting with one-minute videos. Here’s something I put together last week:

I’m planning to post this to the Making Movies blog sometime this week.

Bryn Canters!

Saturday, March 4th, 2006

Bryn’s been trying to canter at riding lessons, but without a lot of success. She’s made some false starts, but not yet anything that counts as a smashing success. Until today, that is. Riding Dancer, who is a small but very eager mare, Bryn cantered several times.

You will need QuickTime to view this video.

It’s a Landslide!

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

When Dwight Silverman at the Houston Chronicle put out his call for bloggers in January, I knew right away I wanted to get involved – for a couple of reasons. I had been thinking about starting a blog about some technical topic that I know and enjoy, and the Chronicle offered a great chance to [...]
