More Trip Preparations
April 7th, 2006As some of you know, I’m paranoid about my backups. I make local backups daily and weekly. Every couple of months, I bring home my 1TB external disk pack, make a backup of the Linux file server (which now has over 600GB of data on it), and then I take the disk pack to work and lock it in my file cabinet.
I go to all that trouble because I have irrreplacable data on my file server, like every digital photo I’ve ever taken. If someone ever were to break in here at Pine Gulch Ranch and steal all my computer stuff, or if – heaven forbid – the house were to burn down, I would lose all that data unless I had an offsite backup.
Since last Friday I’ve been meaning to bring the disk pack home so I can make the backup before my trip. I kept forgetting until yesterday. It takes a long time to copy all that data, and it’s become obvious that the backup won’t complete until well after it’s time to leave for the airport. So Wendy has volunteered to find someone willing to take my disk pack into their home for a week. (Jackie?)
That means I don’t have to drive over to Clear Lake this morning, which also means I won’t get a chance to swing by Fry’s and look for a microphone extension cable. Oh well, I can make do without it.
So I’m here all morning and have plenty of time to make comments over at the TechBlog, which has replaced Slashdot as my favorite place to post Tech comments that don’t belong here.
