BarCamp Houston
June 10th, 2006I’m spending this morning and early afternoon at an “unconference” called BarCamp Houston. I brought my laptop because the camp has a 54mbps wifi connection. I’m not going to try to provide a continuous running commentary, but I’ll be posting a few things during the day.
We’re holding the first session right now on “How to put Houston on the high-tech map”. We’re going around the room introducing ourselves to each other. I see about 35 people in the room, and I can hear several more hanging around just outside the meeting room. Initial impressions: there are a lot of people here who describe themselves as Ruby on Rails programmers, entrepreneurs and podcasters.
I brought along a talk on “Deathproofing your personal web site”. It’s a subject that interests me, and something I’ve been thinking about for a while. Last night I threw together a quick, short presentation in Open Office. When I got to the camp this morning, I ran into Robert Nagle, who will probably be the only person here that I’ve met in person before. I showed the presentation to Robert, and it turns out he’s done some thought and research on the same subject, so he’s going to join me in making the presentation. It should be fun.
2:16 PM: Robert and I were supposed to go on at 2:00, but a Ruby on Rails presentation is running long.
I’m seeing a lot of Apple Powerbooks and iBooks here. Just glancing around the room, I see four Apple computers, as many as Windows computers.

Can you make your deathproofing personal web sites presentation available to us? I am in the process of setting up several personal web sites, and I am sure I could benefit from your experiences.
Thanks,
Jerry

I second Jerry’s motion…I missed out on BarCamp Houston this weekend. Would love to hear/read about your Deathproofing Personal Websites presentation.
Great pictures, btw.
Cheers,

Thanks for the interest, guys. The presentation isn’t really fit for public consumption yet. In fact, it really wasn’t fit for consumption on Saturday, because I threw it together at 1AM that morning, and then when I discovered Robert had done some thinking along the same lines, he threw some of his ideas into the presentation, adding information, but reducing the organization.
I think what I need to do is write up the ideas in essay form (or at least in blog-post form) and post them here.

I’ll throw something together eventually and post here when it’s done.

Jim,
Thanks for including my blog in your blog roll. I just completed a more or less seemless transition from blogger.com to http://www.jerrymahone.org/wp. The less part of it is that I managed to toast the template to my blogger.com blog (AsyncThread). However, I have purchased several domains (read the gory details on my new blog), and I want to have them point to one another in such a way that they all end up at http://www.jerrymahone.org/wp. Including the blogger.com blog.
Anyway, working on that for now, but I’ll keep you up to date on my progress. Eventually, I am going to have the sites working so that folks can check up on us and see our posted pictures, etc.
Later,
Jerry
