Family Guy takes on a-ha!

August 25th, 2006

The Fox cartoon series Family Guy has a mixed reputation at our house. Summer and I think it’s funny, but Wendy says it’s rude, crude, and disgusting. (Or words to that effect.) But every now and then the Family Guy writers and producers display uncompromised genius. Here’s an example…

Back in the eighties came a remarkable music video called “Take on Me” by the pop band a-ha. It used rotoscoping, to animate sequences of the video that take place within the pages of a comic book. Rotoscoping is not a new technique, as Kevin Tumlinson wrote about recently on our video production blog, but the a-ha video was a dazzling example of the technique. If you don’t remember the video, here it is in its entirety, courtesy of YouTube:

Now take a look at this short clip from Family Guy:

If you’re not laughing by the end, then you need to rush to your doctor to have your funny bone examined.

I’m on Wendy’s side. I can’t stand this show. Kenny loves it. I think it’s just plain gross!
