When Stanford fired head football coach Walt Harris earlier this month after the Cardinal concluded a 1-11 season, speculation was rampant that Auburn’s genius offensive coordinater Al Borges might be Stanford’s next coach. Borges was said to be “absolutely” interested in Stanford, and Stanford was interested in him. Borges would have been a good fit at Stanford; he runs a west-coast style offense and spent many years coaching in the PAC-10. As it turns out we Auburn fans can breath a little easier, because Stanford has just introduced former NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh as its new coach. This doesn’t mean we’ll be able to hold onto Borges indefinitely; he’s a great coach and he wants to run his own program. Eventually some school in need of a head coach will steal him away from us.
