Ground WHAT day?

February 2nd, 2007

I don’t want to hear about groundhog day.

If you want to speak to me of traditional rituals, especially those involving animals, speak to me of Derby day at Churchill Downs and the call to the post. Speak to me of the march of the ducks at the Peabody Hotel. Or speak to me of the flying of the eagle at Jordan-Hare stadium. Do not speak to me of rituals that take place in the cold and that involve some overweight rodent and his shadow, in particular if those rituals can portend a longer winter.

I do not like winter, even the mild variety we have here on the Texas gulf coast. This winter has seemed colder and rainier than usual, with more days and nights in the thirties than we usually have. I’m ready for it to be over and I don’t need some hole-dwelling yankee critter telling me it’s going to continue. This winter will be over soon, and I don’t care what your groundhog, your warthog, your hedgehog, your Guinea hog, your Hereford hog, or your bush hog have to say about it.

So there!

Punxy determined it was going to be an early Spring, so that at least is good news. :-)
