Opportunities in conflict

Monday, January 29th, 2007

First there was this (and this) and then there was this. Now there’s this.
It’s a good thing, and not really as much of a change as it might sound.
Update: Cindy the Squip at Dusting my Brain has taken note of my situation and used it as an opportunity to toy with my dignity.

Doin’ some hard crack

Monday, January 15th, 2007

One of the distinct memories I have of Mother is of a conversation I overheard when I was very young. I think the conversation was with Aunt Nita, and I think it took place in the kitchen at the Calvert’s house, but I can’t be sure; all I really remember is the topic: peanut brittle. [...]

Nineteen years and counting . . .

Happy Anniversary my darling bride!

This time a year ago, we were buying plywood and preparing for a hurricane in 100 degree weather. Today the weather is cool and there’s nothing threatening us from the Gulf. What a difference a year makes.

More about Terry’s Pizza

Monday, August 7th, 2006

Huntsville Times feature write Lee Roop has a nice article today about Terry’s Pizza: Pizza lovers recall times at Terry’s ‘cheesy heaven’. If you read this blog, some of the words may sound familiar to you. Oh yeah, the “woman at the other end of the phone” — that was Wendy.

Nineteen cool things in the greater Pearland, Friendswood, Clear Lake metropolitan area

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

A meme has been going around the Houston-area blogs on the theme of “Twenty cool things in my town.” It was started by a Chronicle article entitled 20 Cool Things About Houston, and it spread to the blogs. Dwight at TechBlog has a roundup of the current spate of lists.
I’ve made my own list of [...]

Happy Birthday Wendy!

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

Happy Birthday to my darling bride, who turns 29 today! (…for the 15th time.)
That’s Wendy on the left.

But the MEN had more FUN!

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

Three men were hiking through a forest when they came upon a large, raging violent river.
Needing to get to the other side, the first man prayed, “God give me the strength to cross the river.”
Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs and he was able to swim across in about two hours, having [...]

That kittens are still cute, especially by the bowlful

If yesterday’s news has you down, just stare at that bowl until you feel better.

Done got dem ol’ broken down blues again

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Wendy called me at work this morning. The van had broken down again on 288 near 610. The A/C had stopped working and the car had nearly overheated. Wendy and Summer found their way to a community center where they called me, and then they called AAA for a tow. We pay AAA extra for [...]

My Ten Year Reading Plan

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

One of the webblogs I like to read is Scott Lynch’s The Dork Lord on His Dork Throne. I started reading Scott’s blog because it’s interesting, funny, and well written. Scott is a volunteer fireman, and his stories of his fire and rescue calls are what hooked me on his site. I later learned that [...]

Now Entering Stage Two of my Dastardly Plot to Infiltrate the Houston Chronicle

Friday, July 7th, 2006

I drove downtown to have lunch with Dwight Silverman of the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday. Dwight wanted to treat me to lunch (a) as a gesture of thanks for blogsitting TechBlog while he was away on vacation and (b) so we could talk about the possibility of me continuing to write for TechBlog as Dwight’s [...]

Weekend TO-DO List

Friday, July 7th, 2006

I took off from work early today. The work week was pretty much a waste. I only did a half day Wednesday because I had an appointment downtown (which I’ll tell you about later), and I missed several hours yesterday because of an appointment in Pearland. So I figured why should Friday be a full [...]
