After one quarter, more or less…
Best commercials:
The FedEx caveman
The Budweiser streaker sheep
Worst commercials:
All the Diet Pepsi commercials
The Pizza Hut commercial
On the field: Pittsburgh is using Auburn’s game plan from the Capital One Bowl.
Update: Observations at halftime
Worst ruling: The incomplete pass call on what was clearly a Seattle fumble late in the first quarter or early […]

Houston’s new Major League Soccer team has chosen its name: Houston 1836. 1836 was the year in which Texas declared its independence from Mexico and Houston was founded by the Allen brothers. It’s unusual for a sports team name, although not all that unusual in the soccer world. It’s different, and I like it.

I’ve decided I’m not going to watch the Rose Bowl tonight. I’m sick of college football. I’ve been sick of college football ever since Auburn stunk up the Capital One Bowl on Monday. Even if it weren’t for that nauseating performance, I’d probably still be sick of college football given the stomach-turning heap of hype […]

If you missed the last play of the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, you missed one of the wildest plays since Cal vs. Stanford and the Stanford marching band. Trailing by 4 with just two seconds left, Michigan ran a hook-and-ladder (hook-and-lateral?) play that featured about umpteen different laterals, a fumble, the Nebraska team storming […]

Good news for us from the Chronicle, The San Francisco Earthquakes are moving town: MLS brings fĂștbol to Houston. They won’t be called the Earthquakes, but what will we call them? My vote would be the Hurricane Evacuation Traffic Jams. Or just the Ritas.
Joke about football, the real kind: Why won’t the NFL give San […]

At VANDERBILT, it takes two: one to change the bulb and one more to explain how they did it every bit as good as the bulbs changed at Harvard.
At GEORGIA, it takes two: one to change the bulb and one to phone an engineer at Georgia Tech for instructions.
At FLORIDA, it […]

This is the 25th anniversary of the intruduction of the Rubik’s Cube to the world. To mark the event, the World Cube Association held a speed-cubing championship at Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The champion’s average time in the final round was 15.10 seconds! That’s amazingly fast.
When I first tried to solve the cube for speed […]

I didn’t think they’d do it after the way they choked the other night, but the Houston Astros have defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 2 in the NLCS and are headed for a World Series matchup with the Chicago White Sox. Congratulations, Astros!

I thought I’d take a break from the Hurricane news and watch some football tonight with the Bucs coming to town to play the Texans. This is my first chance to watch former Auburn tailback Carnell Cadillac Williams play. I’m hoping the Caddy will get a bunch of carries and a bunch of yards tonight, […]

Does anybody out there know of places that are matching donations to hurricane relief funds? For example, 37signals was matching donations up to $5000, but they hit their limit before I could forward a copy of my Red Cross donation. Perhaps there are other organizations out there with deeper pockets than 37signals that are also […]
