Wings Over Houston 2008

October 30th, 2008

Summer and I went to the Wings Over Houston air show this past Sunday, and of course we took our cameras. It was my first trip to the show since its early years in 1986. I took a bunch of photos, and have posted a set of my favorites at my Flickr account. We did not stay for the entire show, because we wanted to get back to the barn to help out with volunteer day, so I do not have any photos of the Thunderbirds flying. Maybe next year.

Riding again

October 30th, 2008

This past Saturday, I started my riding lessons again. This time, instead of riding one of the school horses, I am riding our horse, Laredo. The advantage to being able to ride Laredo is that, once I’m comfortable with him, I can come out to the barn and ride him any time I want to. Because he’s our horse.

I have a couple more photos in the Flickr set.

Eye on Gustav

August 29th, 2008

Although he’s not a meteorologist, SciGuy Eric Berger provides some of the best, most rational analysis of hurricane threats to Houston. Of course, that includes the latest threat to the Texas coast, Gustav. This morning — the third anniversary of Katrina’s landfall — Eric notes that, although it’s way too early for the models to be very accurate, the most historically reliable models still show Gustav making landfall in the Louisiana/Mississippi area.

My analysis of Gustav is somewhat less scientific:

Inactivity

August 10th, 2008

Those of you who follow this blog (well, both of you) have noticed some inactivity here lately. Some of you already know the reason for the inactivity, and for those of you who do not, I’m sorry, but I am probably not going to supply an explanation right now. Maybe later. Just chalk it up to “One of those things.”

Giddy on the smell of smoke and freedom…

July 4th, 2008

I took the camera and tripod to the Pearland library, which has a decent view of “The Rig” at Pearland High School, where the city fireworks show was this year. My first ever attempt at shooting fireworks (I have made similar photos of lightning). The results are not too bad. What you see below is one of the photos; click it to go to Flickr and see the entire set.

Random Independence Day photos

July 4th, 2008

Summer and I went to the barn this afternoon to take care of the horses. I grabbed my camera and snapped a few random shots. Except for the first and last photos, these were all shot at the barn or on the way there.

Summer’s photos for Assignment: Houston were this photo and this one. (Summer does not allow reposting of her Flickr photos, so I cannot embed them here.)
